Back in Rio de Janeiro

I haven’t been back to Rio since I lived here for 5 months in 2002 during my third year at university. It was exciting to be back and to meet up and stay with a good friend of mine from here, Mariana, her daughter Melissa and fiancé Paul.

Paul is Dutch, home to delicious syrup waffles; they have bought a syrup waffle machine over from Holland, like a toastie-maker and are hoping to start selling them in local markets. They are certainly yummy and should go down a treat with sweet-toothed Brazilians and Dutch tourists missing home.It made a really nice change to relax with friends in their home – cooking, watching a film and we rose to the challenge admirably of playing a similar game to junior Trivial Pursuit in Portuguese, only just pipped to the winning post by Melissa.A warm-up game of snakes and ladders.

We stayed in Rio for the weekend, then went to a beautiful island a few hours away, Ilha Grande, and came back for another weekend. Thank you very much Mariana, Melissa and Paul.
