Isla del Sol

Isla del Sol is an island on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca not far from Copacabana. There are lots of day trip boat tours from Copacabana to the island but we had read about an alternative option which turned out to be lovely. We spent four hours up and down hills and along the lake shore through beautiful, peaceful countryside to arrive at a village on the mainland which faced the island. From here, the locally community take turns to row the few tourists who arrive here across the mile of water to the island.

We had a lovely old man called Juan who was happy to take a rest and chat periodically on the way across. We left him with a tip and some biscuits to give him the strength to get back.
Once on the island we wandered to the local village and found a fantastic place to stay. Our room had panoramic views over the lake and the mountains. It was so spectacular that we set our alarm to watch the sunrise at 6.30am.
Wandering around the islandSunset with views over the Cordillera Real.
On the pre-Inca Table of Sacrifices.
The island was so peaceful. There are no vehicles and the only sounds are distant voices and braying donkeys.
